The seven sword, one more wuxia from China
Full Movie
The seven sword
We continue with the latest news of Asian cinema, although today we have something a little less known than we have reviewed the rest of the week. You already know how we like wuxia, but also how we start to get fed up with the new Chinese wuxias that are based only on some CGI in a big way, forgetting everything else that makes up the movie. Well, we have found a current Chinese wuxia called The seven sword that, although it has some important special effects, is not its only bet and manages to tell us a good story and add some more point to classic that, at least, has aroused our curiosity.
The seven sword
Some pretty standard personages
The story begins by telling us the legend of the Eye of God and the Eye of the Devil, both with such great powers that make the one who possesses them able to dominate the world; a sect already has the eye of God well guarded, so when the location of the Devil's Eye is known, different factions go there and fight among themselves to get it, leaving only one warrior standing with the Eye. One of the heroes who tried to save him manages to flee with his daughter, although poisoned, so he has to leave her to a warrior who will take her to the Sacred Mountain and train her, getting two, two of the greatest magical swords on Earth . After a few years, the evil one who seized the Eye of the Devil has five of the seven great magical swords, and needs the other two to have enough power to seize the Eye of God and achieve immortality, so he will attack all clans to discover where these swords are. The survivors of one of the clans meet the two who had been training in the Magic Mountain and allied to end the evil clan, who will take advantage of all the dirty tricks and tricks they can to defeat them.
The truth is that we have summed up the main plot quite a bit, but the film has much more, in fact it is one of those typical Chinese films that try to put so many plots, so many characters and so many action scenes in an hour and a half, that are even made too fast (especially the beginning), with no opportunity to present the characters or the situation, going from one scene to another immediately as if we already knew half of the things that are happening; something like if we had all read the book and we just wanted to see the movie version to learn about its protagonists and shape the action scenes. So, if it weren't because it is actually quite simple to understand, we would be missing every two by three.
The seven sword
Scenes that remind us of other movies
The best part is that apart from the main story of action, heroes and villains, magic and fantasy, etc. We can also enjoy other stories of love, camaraderie, student teacher relationship, honor and respect, etc. that even more superficially, they will complement the story quite well, offering us a complete film, not of simple action and sword fighting. Always without neglecting that it is a wuxia, and that the screen can not fail to show elements of magic and fantastic at all times and that sword fighting has to be its main element, occupying most of the footage; All the rest are like add-ons to make it more complete.
And the basic problem of the film is the low quality that is perceived of it, which is not real, because it has good special effects, movements with cables, etc. but you can see an image like Teleserie and above all, although it has some characters that could be pretty cool, nor their characterizations are as spectacular as they could be, except that the good ones are in white and the bad ones in black, all the characters are quite similar to each other; neither the actors who interpret them are a big deal, and that is what makes the film dwarf, very weak performances (all with a stick face, without showing the slightest expression) and for action scenes, even if they have been directed and they are quite spectacular, it is noted that the actors weaken a bit and their needs have to be compensated with camera work.
The director of this has been Francis Nam (Detective Dee and the Cursed Forest) who is seen to be becoming a good resource when making films of this type with little money.
In short, a very good story (typical of wuxia), a way of making the movie trying to respect the classics (wuxias of the 80s), although taking advantage of new technologies, but a somewhat poor billing that shows above all in one very amateur actors.
The best of the movie:
That they know how to combine pure action well with other types of different plots.
The worst of the movie:
Those beginnings in which one does not understand anything about how fast they go, although we are getting used to it and even like it.
