New dragon gate inn, a remake in style
New dragon gate inn
We continue with our small review of Asian classics in which the power of women over men is demonstrated, and today we wanted to recover a film that is actually a remake, but that brings some new details to the original that make it very interesting. New Dragon gate Inn is the remake of the classic wuxia Dragon inn, this time, the same story was recovered (with some irrelevant changes), but in view of the triumph of the first film and having become a myth of this kind In the cinema, Tsui Hark wanted to recover it and make it even bigger, contributing great stars of the time, a more appropriate budget and spectacular action scenes, also the change from being a Taiwanese film to the new production in Hong Kong is quite noticeable in some aspects.
New dragon gate inn
An extraordinary wuxia
The story is basically the same as in the classic, an eunuch of the emperor has taken over some lands and has achieved all the power imaginable with his special army (even behind the emperor's own backs), but when an emperor's messenger arrives, he has to kill him and hide the evidence that he has been there; however, he leaves his two children alive in the hope that they will serve him for something. Later, the eunuch decides to send the two children with a small escort through the desert, to see if the rebels try to rescue them and so they can ambush them and capture them. The rebels come to save the children, but not the bosses, so the army decides to follow them and act later, with the luck that in the middle of the desert they will stop at an inn where several groups of characters converge: some Reputable merchants, some members of the army, the rebels, the inn workers themselves ... when a sandstorm arrives and no one can leave, each group will have to try to hide and survive as it is, in addition to meeting the objectives that They have brought them there.
If we already try to compare it with the original movie, we check that the part of the story has not been worked out much, basically it's the same, that's why it's so good! Even as a tribute, the same type of music, costumes, some stages, etc. have been left. But there are some changes that we liked a lot:
In the first place, the role of girls in history, which take on much more prominence and even manage to have the main role of the film, only demonstrating their charisma.
Humor is present in this version, as was normal in the wuxias of the time (especially those that were related to Tsui Hark) throughout the story there are very funny moments.
It has even added some gore and bizarreism with some elements that may go a bit of what the general image of the film is, but that for us always represent a good addition.
New dragon gate inn
Maggie Cheung always perfect
Speaking of the most technical part of the movie, this version has been directed by Raymond Lee (Swordsman 2) and Ching Siu-Tung (A Chinese ghost story, Swordsman) two greats of action cinema, who have not worried much about the story itself, but they have done it for the rest of the elements of the film, creating a much bigger show, with very careful locations (although it seems not), looking for more scene composition and photography, but above all improving a lot the action part, with some choreographies that are not realistic or the typical ones in which you see the perfection of the choreographies or the mastery of the actors, but in which the direction, the assembly, the framing of the planes, etc. It is very thought so that it looks spectacular and with an incredible dynamism (which is something that the original was lacking, because it was from the time it was), and how could it be less, an exaggeration of cables in any scene (although it is not of action), it seems that everyone knows how to fly ... We love it!
And finally, we cannot ignore the actors, since it is one of the main assets of this version; Without a doubt, the one that takes the palm is Maggie Cheung (The iceman cometh, The heroic trio) that fills the screen in every scene in which it appears, not only because we love it, but we are sure that it is the best of all the movie; but also in the other main roles we have super stars: Brigitte Lin (The bride with White hair, Zu warriors of the magic mountain) and Tony Leung Ka-Fai (Prison on fire, Election) and even a Donnie Yen (Ip Man) although it is very wasted.
In short, if you are the wuxias and action films of Hong Kong of the '90s, this is a must, although you have already seen its predecessor, it will not cease to surprise you with the changes (mostly generational) that.

To start without taking into account any comparison, we will tell you that this is the typical wuxia film of the '80 / '90, yes, without the fantasy that is often associated with this genre, but with an excellent history, very localizations originals and spectacular action scenes.
