Today's review is not an extreme movie, rather we would say that it is a family or even children's film made in China, but with one very good elements, which have made us recognize it. Monster Hunt is a fantasy story combined with martial arts in a world where humans and monsters live together, so we could almost say that it is a wuxia for children, but that it has achieved an incredibly high collection in China. We had the opportunity to see it in cinema at the Nits Festival of Cinema Oriental and the truth is that it is quite impressive, a shame not to have enjoyed it in 3D, but I think that is an impossible question.
Monster hunt
An adorable creature
As we have already told the story, it is situated in a world where humans and monsters coexisted without problems, until humans banished monsters to another world to live in peace, although they were never left alone, there have always been monsters among us disguised as humans and only a few know how to recognize them. There are currently two problems, the first is that in the world of monsters a change of power is happening and you can only return to an acceptable situation thanks to the natural heir of the kings of monsters (or those who were until the new applicant killed them); the other problem is that in the world of humans, the monster hunter's guild wants to regain its power and reputation, so they need to prove that they are still very valid and that without them the world would be filled with monsters. Everything is accelerated when the heir of the king of monsters (a newborn monster) comes to hide from the world of humans and is welcomed by a bartender and a low-ranking monster hunter who will debate between killing, selling or protecting him, while who are chased by both monsters and hunters and must cross half the world through a thousand dangers. In the end they will discover their authentic role and that of the heir throughout history.
The truth is that the whole image of the film is quite childish, with some very adorable monsters that are impossible to be scary, not even respect anyone, with a very moralistic story and creation of basic values, even with some scenes that well They could enter some Disney movie (with their musical numbers, their funny and childish jokes, but full of goodness, etc.), but we must also tell you that there are some very attractive things in this film that make anyone can enjoy it, from the more thug, even the most radical.
Monster hunt
Awesome fights
The most important thing is its wuxia character, with some martial arts scenes worthy of any more serious or more genre film; directed by Huan-Chiu Ku (Once upon a time in China II, Iron monkey), with incredible choreographies, of course aided by CGI and a lot of cable, but that does not cease to have merit, using a thousand different and invented weapons and even directing real human fights against imaginary monsters that are only CGI on screen.
Its artistic part is also unbeatable, even if it is a Chinese production, with perfect special effects and monsters that, although they do not convince us with their rounded and childish designs, they do have movements, textures, etc. They leave us with their mouths open.
The actors are no big deal, the typical super-exaggerated comedy actors, here what matters are the monsters much more than the humans, although its female protagonist has personally loved us Bai Baihe (Chongqing hot pot), all the protagonism lies in the adorable creature that is the baby monster.
In charge of directing the film is Raman Hui, best known for participating in the animations of great hits such as Shreck or Madagascar; With what we see that all the efforts of the film are put into animation and martial arts, little else.
In short, an entertaining children's film with adorable animals and a great ethical and moral value to teach children, but that can be enjoyed without any problem by everyone by offering a style similar to wuxia (humorous, of course) .
The best of the movie:
Some of their struggles combining real image and CGI are impressive.
The worst of the movie:
That even evil monsters are adorable.
