Hellevator, good sample of Japanese cyberpunk
Full Movie
Hellevator
Today we dare with another one of those really extreme movies that few people see (we don't know if it's because they don't like it or because it scares them). Well, we have decided to see and review Hellevator without knowing anything about her; by its title we thought we would meet another one of those somewhat stupid horror movies, but we have been pleasantly surprised to see a cyberpunk product that, although it is a B series with a very low budget, has put us in an unexpected place.
Hellevator
Some psychedelic scenes
The story is in a future Japan where, without knowing what has happened, humanity lives underground, in facilities structured by levels (more than 200 levels underground in total). Our protagonist is a young schoolgirl with some telepathic powers by which she can know people's thoughts and past lives, but also very shattered by her own traumatic past. To alleviate her sorrows, she resorts to smuggling tobacco (in that society it is a prohibited substance) and because of that she has some problems with justice, who pursues her until she hides in one of the elevators that transport people between The different levels of the city. In that elevator different individuals are entering and leaving very peculiar, but the worst comes when some policemen have to take in him two very dangerous criminals who, by various circumstances will manage to escape and terrorize all those who are in the elevator at that time . It will be then when someone has to act so that nothing happens to civilians, but there everyone will have a different secret that only the girl can know thanks to her powers.
If we analyze its times a bit, the film begins with a very good image, without teaching almost anything, but perfectly implying that it is a cyberpunk and somewhat bizarre story (well, like all Japanese cyberpunk); The entire first part with the entry and exit of people and seeing the different members of a very strange society has left us with our mouths open, all very bizarre; after the explosion of intensity that involves the escape of prisoners, the film slows down a bit, becoming something much more ... not normal, but predictable and monotonous; but nothing happens because that moment is only the prelude that is preparing us for an unexpected end at least that may not leave us again with our mouths open, but it will make us see that having seen the full movie has not been any waste of time.
Hellevator
Quite shocking in general
The strongest point of the whole film is undoubtedly in its image that, although it is made with a ridiculous budget, very limited scenarios, a somewhat dirty photograph, etc. everything adapts perfectly to show a dark and dirty future, in our opinion quite similar to that of the movie Brazil (from which he has copied many elements) that immerses us completely in something that we are not accustomed to and that the true fans of gender will pleasantly surprise us. So we have a good lesson that you don't need a lot of money to be able to tell a good story, maybe something simple and a bit unstructured, but very appropriate to the feelings you want to convey and with a fairly powerful (non-moralist) message.
To all that you can add some gore, a protagonist without any kind of design that makes it stand out, but with great force, a story that is told almost without words, some beasts to the beast, etc ... that is, many elements that the They will undoubtedly become a good example of extreme Asian cinema.
Its director is Hiroki Yamaguchi (Bloody chainsaw girl), who had not convinced us with his other work, but that right now we verify that he has some more titles with good looks that we will try to recover, because they are very interesting.
In short, the typical film that perfectly defines the genre of Japanese cyberpunk: bizarre, dark, dirty, chaotic ... and many other things we love to see. It may slow down your ignorance and low budget, but it is something to keep in mind.
The best of the movie:
We rarely have an original ending, this we consider it to be enough.
The worst of the movie:
Do not talk more about products like this.
So, watch the movie, What held on..
